Description: There are some false brethren teaching today that you must be Spirit-baptized and speak in tongues to be saved. Does the Scripture teach that the Spirit-baptism is for salvation or something else? What does the Scripture actually teach?

TRANSCRIPT OF THE VIDEO (thanks to Carmie of KnowJesusFirst.com and GodIsLove633 on Youtube for the transcription):

Brother Hicks Speaking: Hello my friends, today I want to talk to you about how the Holy Spirit baptism is not required for salvation. Many people are taught this error by a false cult out there, that goes by the name of Oneness, or a variety of different names, basically that they have a number of heresies, including they believe that Jesus is His own Father, He baptized Himself with His own Spirit, He forsakes Himself, [etc.] They have a multiple personality disorder god, but one of the most damning things besides their belief in a false god, is this idea that you must be baptized in the Holy Spirit to be saved, because what this does is that it creates within truly saved people, people who've forsaken sin, they've repented and believed the gospel, and they've turned to Jesus Christ, they're following him; it creates within them condemnation that they are not saved because they haven't spoken in tongues. And many people it pushes them off and they just give up, and they just give up on following Jesus Christ because they say, "Well, He must have forsaken me because I haven't received the baptism in the Spirit yet." Meanwhile it the very Oneness doctrine they're being taught, that is keeping them in doubt and unbelief, and keeping them from receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And so it plays on itself and it creates, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy in many ways, they feel they're rejected and then they do not receive, because they're living in doubt and unbelief because they feel they're rejected. But it's all because they're following man's traditions, they're following these false teachings of this Oneness group, and they're not believing the true gospel of Jesus Christ.

Now what I want to do is show you some plain Scriptures. I want you to just think about this for a second, please stop and put off all man's traditions you've been taught, and if you believe in this Oneness idea that you have to be baptized in the Spirit and speak in tongues to be saved, I want you to please consider this; the Lord Jesus Christ, God Almighty made flesh, did He have the Spirit of God in His life, before He was baptized in the Spirit? Think about this, you're going to say that God Almighty, didn't have the Spirit of God in His life. When He was walking on earth He didn't have the Holy Spirit until He was baptized in the Spirit? Of course not, my friend! When He was baptized in the Spirit He wasn't baptized in the Spirit to be cleansed, He wasn't baptized in the Spirit to be saved, He wasn't baptized in the Spirit to finally receive the Holy Spirit into His life, it was for power. It was what propelled Him into His ministry, because He as God Almighty humbled Himself, and became flesh, became a man, as we see in Philippians 2. So our Lord Jesus humbled Himself and became one of His own creatures, and He operated as one of his creatures on earth, He didn't operate as God walking on earth among men. Yes, He was God Almighty, but He operated as a man anointed by the Holy Spirit, and He lived the life of a man, a perfect man. He had temptations and things that we all experience, but He was without sin. He didn't need the baptism of the Spirit to be saved, He didn't need salvation, He is salvation, and so when Jesus was baptized in the Spirit, let us go back and read Luke chapter 3: 21 to 22; I want you to see this, I want you to think about this,

"Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased", the Lord Jesus was baptized in the Spirit at this point. He being about thirty years old at this time, He was baptized in the Spirit. Are you going to say that for the first thirty years of His life [as a man], He didn't have the Holy Spirit in His life, until that point when He was baptized in the Spirit? This is what you're being taught by these Oneness people, by these false teachers, they are telling you [that] you don't have the Spirit until you've spoke in tongues, until you've been baptized in the Spirit, but what did Jesus say about the baptism in the Spirit? The Lord Jesus Himself, who is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit, He said something completely different about the Spirit baptism. He never once said it was for cleansing of sin, He never once said it was for salvation, He never once said it was for repentance, He never once said anything of that nature. It is for men who had already repented and believed, it was for them who had already been saved, to have power.

Let's see what Jesus said in Acts chapter 1 verse 8. Jesus said this; "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."

So Jesus said nothing about salvation, nothing about cleansing, nothing about forgiveness, this was for power, for people who already believed on him, who already were following him, who already were saved, who already had the Holy Spirit in their lives. It was for them to have power, to witness, the same reason Jesus was baptized in the Spirit, it was for power, it wasn't for salvation. The Lord Jesus didn't need salvation, it wasn't for cleansing, He didn't need cleansing, it was for power. My friends, you do need power, you need to be baptized in the Spirit, I can say like Paul "I thank my God I speak in tongues more than you all" [1 Corinthians 14:18], but those tongues and being baptized in the Spirit are not saving, they are for people who are saved, it is a gift God gives to those who are saved. It is not salvation itself, and you do not have to receive the baptism [in the Spirit] to be saved.

I don't want you to feel that you haven't been saved because you haven't spoken in tongues, but you do need to seek the baptism in the Spirit. There is no reason for a child of God to just sit back and not get everything God has for them in this life, and not be the best minister of the Gospel you can be, not be the best servant you can be. You need to receive the baptism in the Spirit. But do not let any man teach you and drag you and entangle you back into sin, once you've been cleansed, once you've escaped the pollutions of this world, and are living a holy life, you're walking free from sin, and you have some man rob you and tell you, "You're not really saved yet, because you haven't spoken in tongues." They're liars, they're children of the devil, they are teaching you lies to keep you in condemnation and away from the truth. I've seen too many dear saints, brother and sisters in the Lord, who have gotten truly saved, and they got caught up in this error, and they've fallen away from the faith. They've given up, because "Well, I haven't received the Spirit I am not saved, and I don't know why I can't receive. God must of rejected me." He hasn't rejected you, my friends, if you have a drawing to follow Jesus Christ, if you want to and you desire to follow Him, then you are being drawn by the Spirit, and if you've repented and believed the Gospel, you are saved and you have the Holy Spirit in your life.

Now what you need to do is to receive the Spirit, it doesn't mean you don't have the Spirit. Here's what needs to be understood; it is a reception, it is a welcoming of the Spirit, who is already present in your life, a welcoming of Him, and you are empowered by Him with gifts and power from on high. As I have given the example a number of times in other teachings on this, it is as if a man is sitting before you in your office and you do not acknowledge their presence. They are there, they're present, but you haven't acknowledged them, you haven't received them yet, you haven't welcomed them yet. You have the Holy Spirit in your life, you're born again, you're a child of god (if you repented and believed the gospel), now you need to welcome the Holy Spirit. You need to receive Him, and be baptized in fullness and overflowing, and have all the gifts of the Spirit outpouring in your life and walk in purity and holiness before Him, be a glorious minister with power of God, through the baptism in the Spirit; but do not err, my brothers and sisters, you do not need the baptism in the Spirit for salvation, that is a lie. Believe what the Scripture says, Jesus says the baptism in the Spirit is for power, Jesus himself was baptized in the Spirit [for power]. Men telling you [that] you need the baptism in the Spirit for salvation are lying to you. Jesus didn't need salvation; He never taught that the baptism in the Spirit was for salvation, it was for power. May the Lord Jesus bless you.
