Description: Many today are content in their powerless and Spiritless "Christianity," but is this the true life for a believer in Jesus Christ? One where people pervert the gifts of the Spirit into merely being natural abilities and not supernatural abilities? Are you a true believer in Jesus or have you been sold a gospel devoid the Spirit of Grace?
Brother Hicks Speaking: Hello brothers and sisters, today I want to talk to you about how the gifts of the spirit are spiritual, not natural. Today there is a movement of people who deny the gifts of the Spirit, some [even] mock the gifts of the Spirit because they are devoid of the Spirit of God, and so they hate the gifts of the Spirit because they do not have them. Instead of pressing into God and getting all they can from God, they start ridiculing His gifts!
Now my brothers and sisters, these gifts are spiritual they are not things you learn. Speaking in tongues, [for example], is not something you learn. It is not the ability of people to learn a bunch of languages. It is a gift given by the Spirit. He gives it. It is not learned. It is not something in your natural ability. It is a gift given by the Spirit, it is not a natural gift. People are born with many natural gifts. You can take two different people and give them the same instructions on playing the piano and one person will excel and the other person will not. It is because some people have natural gifts in some areas and some people have natural gifts in other areas. That is not spiritual gifts.
Your ability to learn languages is not spiritual gifts. The gift of tongues is speaking a language the Holy Spirit gives you, or languages [He gives you]. It will not have anything to do with learning languages. If you have been given the ability to learn a lot of languages and you have a natural ability for that, that is good, praise God for that; but that is not the gift of tongues. Just because in the book of Acts, chapter 2, when they spoke in tongues people heard them speak in their languages does not mean that they learned those languages. They did not learn those languages, that is what made it a miracle! That is what made it where these men were looking and confounded; they were like, “What is going on? Are these people drunk? They are speaking in… we are all hearing our own languages.” These 120 did not know the languages, it was a gift by the Holy Spirit, it was not learning a language.
Do not let men try to rob you of being with the Spirit of God and walking in the Spirit and being led by the Spirit [just] because they don’t have the gifts of the Spirit! You should have all the gifts of the Spirit and move into the gifts of the Spirit by the power of God, because you so press into God and you are so following the Lord Jesus Christ that you have the gifts of the Spirit operating in your life; not trying to change them and make them not exists anymore, making natural things into the gifts of the Spirit. Another way they do this is they say, “Prophecy is really preaching.” My friends, there are people who are not preachers of the gospel who are motivational speakers who preach their motivation and things like that, that is a natural gifting. Even people that preach the gospel have a natural gifting for that, a leaning for that. It does not mean that is a spiritual gift. Prophecy is different from preaching. They are not the same. Anyone can preach, [but] prophecy is a spiritual gift given to people. You can train people how to preach a certain way, how to be great preachers, [but] you can’t train them to be prophets. Yes there may be things they [prophets] need to learn, but prophecy is a gift of the Spirit and not something you learn in your own natural wisdom, your own natural knowledge. It is a gift of the Spirit and is spiritual. It is speaking forth the words from God as in “thus saith the Lord,” not quoting Scripture! Any atheist can read Scripture, that doesn’t make them a prophet.
And so you men who have ripped out the spirituality of the Scripture, ripped out the spirituality of faith in Jesus Christ, you are following a false Jesus. If your Jesus has zero spirituality and your Christianity has zero spirituality then it is not of God! When you say that the Holy Spirit does not do things and does not operate like He did in the early church [then] you have a false gospel! Either you live like the early church and have the same gospel as the early church or you have another gospel, a false gospel! If your gospel says, “The gifts of the Spirit have passed away,” then you have a false gospel, you do not have the gospel of Jesus Christ.
In Mark chapter 16, Jesus said this, He said, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:16). So He is talking about people that believe. Now many people that don’t believe in the gifts of the Spirit like to claim to believe, but what did Jesus say would happen if someone believed? “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
He didn’t say “These signs shall follow My Apostles.” The Apostles already believed! He was talking to them! What did He say? [He said,] “These signs shall follow them that believe.” So right after He says, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved” Jesus says, “He is what is going to happen with those people, those people that believe. They are going to have signs following.” If you do not have signs following, I am not talking about you following signs, but if you do not have signs following you because of your natural union with God and the Holy Spirit operating through your life because you are led by the Spirit of God and you walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh, [then] you are not of God. [Signs following] are a natural result of being in Christ, you will have anointing and you will operate in the gifts of the Spirit.
The big problem is that most of you are not in Christ, because you are living in constant, daily sin. So you are not in Christ, because the Scripture says in 1 John chapter 3, verse 5, “… in him is no sin.” You are not in Him, that is why you keep sinning, and so you do not have the gifts of the Spirit. Instead of just reading this [passage in Mark 16] and saying, “Wait, this says ‘he that believeth’ and I don’t have any of these things following me. I have no signs following. I must obviously not believe.” Instead you say, “Well, I believe, because I mentally acknowledge things about Jesus, so I have to change these things around and say that these things [signs] do not happen anymore. That was only for the early church.” The Scripture never teaches that. In 1 Corinthians chapter 13, verse 8, it doesn’t teach that these things will happen until the Bible comes or until the death of the last apostle, it says until the PERFECT is come! No one understood that at the time to be the Bible, and why would the Scripture of the New Testament, which is a revelation of God’s New Covenant, include all these mentions of gifts of the Spirit and that people that believe would have signs following, only to say that when the New Testament in its written form was complete all that would not happen anymore? It makes no sense, my brothers and sisters. That is men, who are devoid of the Spirit of God trying to make themselves seem to be Christian when they are not Christ-like at all. They keep sinning and have no spirituality.
Jesus was anointed with the Spirit of God (Luke 4:18). He went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil (Acts 10:38). You go about healing nobody. You go about with no signs following. You go about sinning. You have nothing to do with Christ, you are not a Christian. You need to repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15). If you are going to be a Christian it means that you are going to have to deny yourself, turn over your foolish and selfish ways where you do not want to operate in the gifts of the Spirit because you are afraid of what people might think of you. If you are concerned about how people might think about you or how you might look “weird” then you do not love Jesus Christ yet. You certainly do not love Him enough to be saved, because you refuse to deny self, take up your cross, and follow Him (Matthew 16:24). You are following men, because you are concerned with what they think and you are not concerned with what Jesus Christ thinks.
You need to repent. When you repent and truly cry out to God you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit and you will speak with other tongues and you will have signs following. My brothers and sisters, you need to follow Jesus Christ. You need to be anointed of the Holy Ghost. And you need to operate in the gifts of the Spirit by Spirit’s will and be a blessing to others. Live the life Jesus Christ wants you to live, live free from sin, and live in the Spirit and grace of God. May the Lord Jesus bless you.
